A panoramic sketch of a panoramic view, from the top of Temple IV.
My time here in the region around Tikal has, again, exceeded my expectations. This place is truly magical. I have spent 2 and a half of the last 3 days roaming around the national park that encompasses the Tikal archeological site. The first day was simply exploration, and it took
from 6am until 4pm to explore most of the site. Yesterday, I went for the afternoon and painted as the sun was setting. Today, I returned for sunrise and was able to do two small watercolors and a colored pencil sketch, in addition to more exploration. The wildlife has been spectacular; I've met people from all over the world; and have achieved my modest painting goals. I could go on and on, but I won't right now. Instead, I'll let photos tell another part of the story.

The infamous Temple V, known for being extremely steep and tall, which affords a remarkable view of much of Tikal.

Standing on the platform at the top of the "stairs" (ladder) up Temple V. The stone stairs the Mayas built are too dangerously steep, and are deteriorating, so people don't climb them anymore.

Painting from the top of Temple V. I spent over 5 hours up there today.

Before sunrise, from the top of Temple V: magical!

Temple I as seen from Temple II. I have a painting of this one, too, but I guess I don't have a photo of it.

A little sketch in my journal, from Temple IV.

So many birds, here. Today I saw a pair of very large, green parrots with very colorful heads; iridescent wild turkeys; and a pair of Falcons. Besides these bird-stars of the day, I have been surrounded by birdsong since I got here.

As you know, I am loving the trees as much as the ruins! I had a "bird's eye view" of this treetop, and its epiphytes, from the top of Temple V this morning.

Monkey!
The time I have spent here has been food for my soul, and I am feeling overwhelmingly grateful for the experience. Much love to you all.
